What cosmetic clinic SEO involves,
and why the rules change it.
Cosmetic clinic SEO is the work of ranking a surgeon’s or clinic’s procedure pages, location pages and Google Business Profile for the searches patients make before booking a consultation, using only claims the law allows.
Most medical practices follow one set of advertising guidelines. Cosmetic practices follow three: the general rules for advertising a regulated health service, the Medical Board’s cosmetic surgery advertising guidelines (in force since 1 July 2023), and Ahpra’s guidelines for advertising higher risk non-surgical cosmetic procedures, which took effect on 2 September 2025. The TGA rules on prescription medicines sit on top. Those rules decide which keywords you can target, what a page can show and how you handle reviews. It’s why we treat cosmetic work as its own discipline within SEO by industry, separate from general SEO for healthcare.
- Cosmetic surgeryOperations that cut beneath the skin, such as breast augmentation, rhinoplasty and liposuction. Medical Board surgery advertising guidelines apply.
- Higher risk proceduresInjectables, dermal fillers, thread lifts, hair transplants and similar. Ahpra’s non-surgical guidelines apply to anyone advertising them.
- Prescription medicinesMost cosmetic injectable products. The TGA controls how, and whether, they can be referred to.
What patients search, and
what your pages can say.
The biggest cosmetic searches in Australia are often the ones a clinic can’t target directly. Here’s real monthly demand, and how a compliant page handles each search.
The TGA no longer accepts terms like “wrinkle reducing injections” where a reasonable consumer would read them as promoting a prescription medicine, and naming products such as “Botox” was never allowed. So we build rankings on the clinic, the practitioner, the consultation and the treatments you can lawfully describe.
| Search | AU searches a month | Status | How a compliant page handles it |
|---|---|---|---|
| botox near me | 4,400 | Off limits | A product name. Win the clinic and consultation searches around it instead. |
| lip filler near me | 2,400 | Higher risk | Risks, recovery and the practitioner’s registration details on the page. |
| breast augmentation sydney | 2,400 | Surgery | Surgery advertising rules: realistic images, no inducements, risks set out. |
| laser clinic near me | 1,900 | Target | A treatment page plus a Business Profile for each real location. |
| plastic surgeon | 1,300 | Titles | Only for practitioners who hold that specialist registration. |
| cosmetic clinic | 1,300 | Target | Home page and location pages with real clinic details. |
| microneedling near me | 1,300 | Target | Treatment page, after checking which guideline covers it. |
| injectables near me | 1,000 | Higher risk | Consultation-led page. Wording signed off by your adviser. |
A procedure page that ranks
and holds up to an audit.
Ahpra runs proactive audits of cosmetic surgery advertising. This is the structure we build to, with each marker tied to a requirement in the guidelines.
- 1 Rhinoplasty consultations
- 2 Dr A. Example (MED000123456)Specialist registration in surgery (plastic surgery)
- 3
- 4 Risks, recovery time and what affects your result
- 5 Fees: what the quote includes
- 6 Book a consultation
- 1Heading built on the procedure, not a product. The page targets the treatment and consultation, with the long-tail questions patients ask in the body.
- 2Who performs it, with registration details. The non-surgical guidelines expect a named practitioner’s registration number and type. Don’t say “specialises” without specialist registration.
- 3Before and after images, used carefully. For surgery: actual patients of the advertising practitioner, with the “after” image no more prominent than the “before”.
- 4Risks and recovery, stated plainly. Surgery advertising must cover risks, or point to where they’re explained. It’s also the content AI answers quote.
- 5Clear pricing, no inducements. Cost information must be accurate and easy to understand. Surgery ads can’t use time-limited discounts or bundled procedures.
- 6No testimonials anywhere on the page. Patient stories, star widgets and embedded reviews are out. The call to action is a consultation.

Local SEO advice that doesn’t
fit a cosmetic clinic.
Standard local SEO leans on reviews and testimonials. For cosmetic clinics, the National Law bans testimonials in advertising, so the playbook changes.
Patients can still post independent reviews on Google. The rules govern what you publish, share and interact with. General information, not legal advice.
| Area | Usual local SEO advice | What we do for cosmetic clinics |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews on your site | Embed Google reviews and star widgets | No review widgets or links to clinical reviews on pages you control |
| Replying to reviews | Thank every reviewer publicly | A reply policy agreed with your adviser, since liking or responding to a positive review can count as using it |
| Social proof | Patient stories and results | Registration details, explained qualifications and memberships |
| Influencers | Free treatment for a post | No free or discounted surgery for promotion. You answer for their content |
| Promotions | “This month only” offers | Plain, accurate fee information with no deadline pressure |

Cosmetic clinic marketing
beyond search.
The main difference is that SEO earns consultation enquiries over months, while paid social and search ads can fill a new practitioner’s diary in weeks. The same guidelines cover your ads, so we write them to the standard of your pages. We run Meta ads management and Google Ads management in-house, which keeps the claims consistent across every channel.

Cosmetic clinic SEO questions.
What is SEO for cosmetic surgeons?
SEO for cosmetic surgeons is ongoing work that helps a surgeon's or clinic's website and Google Business Profile rank for procedure and location searches, so more prospective patients book consultations. It covers procedure pages, practitioner profiles, local listings, technical fixes and authority building, all within Ahpra and TGA advertising rules.
Can cosmetic clinics use patient reviews and testimonials?
No, not in advertising. The National Law prohibits testimonials, and for cosmetic procedures any positive statement about the experience, outcome or practitioner's skill counts. Patients can still review you independently on Google, but your website and social pages shouldn't embed, link to or reshare those reviews.
Can we say "Botox" or "anti-wrinkle injections" on our website?
Not product names, and generic treatment terms carry risk too. The TGA has never allowed names like "Botox" in advertising, and its updated guidance no longer accepts terms like "wrinkle reducing injections" where consumers would read them as promoting a prescription medicine. We build pages around the consultation instead.
Are before and after photos allowed?
Yes, with conditions. For cosmetic surgery, images must show actual patients of the advertising practitioner, give realistic information and not make the "after" image more prominent. Single images that suggest an outcome aren't allowed. We build image galleries to those rules and keep them off ad landing pages where they'd add risk.
How much does SEO cost for a cosmetic clinic?
SEO for a cosmetic clinic costs between $1,000 and $5,000 monthly with Humming Web. Scope grows with the number of procedures and practitioners you want found, the compliance clean-up your current pages need and how crowded your city is. An injectables-only clinic sits lower than a multi-surgeon practice. Our SEO pricing page lists what changes the scope. Local SEO starts from $780/month.
How long does cosmetic clinic SEO take?
Most clinics see Business Profile and ranking movement in two to three months and steadier consultation enquiries in six to twelve months. Clinics that first need a compliance clean-up, or compete for surgery terms in a capital city, take longer.
Do the advertising guidelines apply to our marketing agency?
Yes. Ahpra's non-surgical guidelines apply to any person or business advertising higher risk procedures, and anyone who authorises advertising is responsible for it. That includes the clinic owner, so we write to the guidelines and you keep final sign-off.
Is SEO or Meta ads better for a cosmetic clinic?
The main difference is that SEO builds enquiries that last without paying per click, while Meta ads bring faster bookings for as long as you spend. Choose SEO for long-term procedure demand and ads for launches or new practitioners. Many clinics run both, under the same advertising rules.
Can Ahpra check our advertising before we publish?
No. Ahpra and the Medical Board can't give advice on or pre-approve advertising. They suggest asking your professional association, a lawyer or your indemnity insurer. Our audit flags likely issues against the published guidelines, but we're not lawyers, so we treat your adviser's view as final.
Can we use influencers to promote our clinic?
Only with care, and never by trading surgery for posts. The cosmetic surgery advertising guidelines rule out free or discounted surgery in exchange for promotion, and your clinic answers for what an influencer publishes for you. We leave influencer content out of your SEO plan unless your adviser has approved the wording. General information, not legal advice.
