Instagram ads by placement:
feed, Stories, Reels and Explore.
Each placement is a different screen. An ad cut for one usually looks wrong in the others.
Meta’s own creative guidance for Reels is vertical 9:16 video with audio, with the hook and call to action kept inside the safe zone, and it reports that more than 75% of Reels views on Instagram are sound on. Its catalogue documentation also maps 9:16 images to Stories and Reels and 4:5 to eligible feed placements.
| Placement | Format and size | What works | When we use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed | Image, carousel or video. 4:5 vertical (1080 × 1350 px) takes the most screen; 1:1 also runs. | A clear product or result in the first frame, a short caption with the offer early, carousels for ranges or before-and-after steps. | Products people compare, offers that need a few lines of detail, and retargeting people who already know you. |
| Stories | Full-screen 9:16 image or video (1080 × 1920 px) between friends’ Stories. | One message per frame, big type, the call to action in the middle of the screen, nothing important at the very top or bottom. | Time-bound offers, events and quick reminders. Viewers tap through fast, so it suits simple asks. |
| Reels | Full-screen 9:16 video (1080 × 1920 px), played with sound by most viewers. | A hook in the opening second or two, a person talking to camera or hands-on demo, captions on screen, the offer said out loud. | Reaching new people cheaply, showing how something works, and testing new angles before they go to the feed. |
| Explore | Shown when someone browses Explore and opens a post; uses your feed creative (1:1 or 4:5). | Visual subjects people browse for fun, like food, fashion, homes and travel. | Discovery for visual brands. We rarely build for it alone; it rides along with feed creative. |
Instagram vs Facebook ads:
same account, different habits.
Instagram and Facebook ads are bought in the same Meta ad account and the same auction. The difference is how people use each app: Instagram is mostly full-screen, visual and video-led, while Facebook mixes the feed with Marketplace, groups and longer posts.
So you rarely have to pick one. We run both, compare cost per lead or sale by platform, then shift the creative mix towards whichever earns its keep. Both sit under our Meta ads management fee, so moving budget between them never changes what you pay us.

Instagram ads management
for a flat weekly fee.
Our Instagram ads management is $100/week + GST, billed monthly at $440 including GST. It isn’t a percentage of spend, and Facebook placements are included because they run from the same account. Your ad budget is separate and goes from your card straight to Meta: most businesses start from $20 a day. See Meta ads and social media pricing for every rate, or our Facebook ads cost breakdown for click and lead costs.
Not included: organic posting to your profile, replying to comments and DMs, and the ad budget itself.
Instagram advertising that
looks native to the app.
Ads that look like TV commercials get skipped. The ones that work look like the posts around them.
- 01
Hooks first, logo later
The opening frame shows the product, the problem or a face. Branding comes once someone is watching, because a logo card at the start is the quickest way to lose a thumb.
- 02
Volume, then judgement
We use AI to make many versions of an idea in vertical and feed shapes, test them together, and a person decides which to cut. Small accounts can test properly without a film crew.
- 03
Your real photos, used well
We crop the product, team and job photos you already have for each placement, then add captions that work on mute.
- 04
Claims you can stand behind
Prices, before-and-after shots and edited product images all count as advertising claims. The ACCC is clear that an ad’s overall impression must not mislead, so we check every claim with you before launch.
Want Reels for your own profile too? Our 9:16 Reels made from your brief start at $49 a month, and done-for-you social media posting keeps the grid active for people who tap through from an ad.
How we run your Instagram ads,
week by week.
Ads usually go live within 5 to 7 business days of the strategy call, then settle into a weekly loop of testing.
- 1 Strategy call
Offer and audience
- Who buys, what they buy and what a sale is worth
- Which placements your offer suits on paper
- 2 Setup
Account, tracking, first creatives
- Instagram account linked, Pixel events tested
- First set of ads in 9:16 and 4:5
- 3 Launch
Broad placements, then evidence
- Meta’s automatic placements first, so the data shows where buyers are
- Weak placements or creatives switched off once the numbers are clear
- 4 Ongoing
Report and refresh
- Weekly report by placement and creative
- New creative before the audience tires of the old one
Who our Instagram advertising agency
suits, and who it doesn’t.
Better to know before you spend.
- Usually a good fit
Products that look good on a phone: fashion, beauty, homewares, food and gifts.
- Usually a good fit
Experiences people browse for: cafes, venues, travel, fitness and events.
- Usually a good fit
Services with a visible result, like renovations, landscaping or cosmetic work within the rules for that industry.
- Often better elsewhere
Emergency jobs. Someone with a burst pipe searches Google. Paid search on Google catches them.
- Often better elsewhere
Offers with nothing to show. If it can’t be pictured, Facebook’s longer copy formats often do more.
- Often better elsewhere
Very small local areas. A tight radius may not hold enough Instagram users to test properly.

eCommerce SEOWhat our clients say
“Humming Web completely transformed how we approach Facebook and Instagram advertising. Before working with them our ad spend felt like money down the drain, high cost per lead, low quality enquiries, and no real transparency from our previous agency.”
“I'd tried two other agencies before Humming Web. This is the first time my Meta Ads have actually made me money. Transparent, fast to respond, and genuinely care about results. 5.2× ROAS in month two. Can't recommend enough.”
“Finally an agency that speaks plain English. Weekly reports tell us exactly what's working — no vanity metrics, no jargon. Leads are up 3× compared to what we were getting before. Direct line to the campaign manager is a game changer.”
“Switched from a large agency where we were just another account number. The difference is night and day. Humming Web actually understand our business, suggest new ideas, and are proactive. Results have been consistent and improving each month.”
Instagram ads questions.
What does an Instagram ads agency do?
An Instagram ads agency is a team that plans, makes and manages paid placements in Instagram's feed, Stories, Reels and Explore so your budget turns into enquiries or sales. Ours handles placement planning, vertical and feed creative, tracking, testing and weekly reporting.
Do Instagram ads cost more than Facebook ads?
Not by default. Both are sold through the same Meta auction, so the price of a click or lead depends on who you target, how many advertisers want them and how good the ad is. For some offers Instagram is cheaper; for others Facebook is.
How much should I spend on Instagram ads?
Running Instagram ads with us costs $100 a week + GST in management, billed monthly, plus a daily budget you pay Meta, starting from $20 a day. A larger area, more products or a competitive market need more budget to test placements properly.
Which Instagram ad placement works best?
The best placement for your business is the one that brings enquiries or sales at a cost you're happy with, and that differs by offer. Reels often find new people, the feed suits detail and retargeting, and Stories suit short offers. We test before deciding.
What size should Instagram ads be?
Make Stories and Reels ads 9:16 vertical at 1080 × 1920 pixels, and feed ads 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 pixels. Explore uses your feed creative. Keep text and logos away from the top and bottom edges of vertical ads, where Instagram places its own buttons.
Is boosting an Instagram post the same as running an ad?
The main difference is that boosting promotes a post you've already published with simpler settings, while Ads Manager gives you full control of objectives, placements, audiences and conversion tracking. Boosting suits a quick push; ad campaigns suit leads and sales you want to measure.
Do I need to post regularly on Instagram to run ads?
No. Ads run from your ad account whether you post or not. Some people tap through to your profile before they enquire, though, so a handful of recent, decent posts helps an ad convert. Our social media management service can handle that if you're short on time.
Can you make Reels ads if I don't have any video?
Yes. We produce video ads with AI from your brief, photos and product details, so you don't need to film anything. If you do have phone footage of your team, products or finished jobs, we can use it, and it often makes the most believable Reels.
How do you know if Instagram ads are working?
We know Instagram ads are working when tracked enquiries or sales come in at a cost that makes sense for your margins. The Meta Pixel records actions on your site, and our weekly report splits cost per result by placement. Likes and followers don't count as results.
